My mother always told me that no matter how much you dislike a person, when you meet them face to face you will find characteristics about them that you like. Jerry Falwell was a perfect example of that. I hated everything he stood for, but after meeting him in person, years after the trial, Jerry Falwell and I became good friends. … I always appreciated his sincerity even though I knew what he was selling and he knew what I was selling.
Hustler magazine founder Larry Flynt.
Wow. Definitely an interesting find Kenneth. I can definitely agree with Flynt’s mom. Meeting someone in person always seems to skew your original view of the them.
Media personalities are quite different to ‘real world’ personalities. More so on the Internet. And of course, for Larry and Jerry, their media personalities are/were very important for their professional lives, as both of them had ‘congregations’ who regularly viewed their materials and speeches. So they had, I guess, to appear much larger than life! Such personalities can become much bigger than ‘real life.’
