Flickr: My first photostream!

I’ve been creating my first albums on Flickr. I’m beginning to see why I prefer it to Picasa. Though the Picasa Albums software is wonderful in its own way, esp. as it really draws so many disparate sources together into one interface. And therein lies my problem: I would like to put all my photographs in ONE place to make access, backing up, uploading and more easier. It seems that Picasa can’t do that easily.

I’m looking at using Flickr as a possible substitute as there is no actual limit in Pro accounts for uploading, it’s easy to manage photos and I’m finding it easy (too easy) to remove duplicates.

Do take a look at my photostream. Which hosting do you prefer – Picasa, Flickr, self-hosting or another?

  1. I think flickr is a fantastic system. As well as being so easy to use its great value is in social networking and sharing photos with people of common interests. That is something you can’t really get with self-hosting.

    For self-hosting I have used Gallery which is quite good. I have probably never fully tested all its functions. I recently tested Zenphoto and I think it is even better.

  2. Yep. Zenphoto … that’s my target… but I have hundreds of photos across several pcs and online that are all messy, and I don’t know what to do with them all. There are so many duplicates… Yikes

    How do you handle that?

  3. I keep all my photos on one computer with backups on DVD and an external hard drive. I don’t really have a problem with duplicates. Having a good system for naming folders helps. I use a date based system.

  5. Thanks, David… I suspect that I need to become more disciplined, but I have pictures sprayed indiscriminately around my system, even in zip files, so I have to collate them into one location. But I’ll likely have dozens of duplicates.

    That’s going to be a problem.

  6. I like Flickr for the social aspects. I also really like their new photo editing which is called Picnik. Thanks for making me a Flickr contact!

  7. Hey, thanks, Elizabeth! i tried Picnik, too. I found it pretty good for basic editing… I would like to vary how the albums look, thought, that’d be nice. I’m coming from hosting my own albums where that sort of thing was available.
